Chinese tourist fined 1,000 yuan for eating durian in a Singapore hotel

Recently, a Chinese tourist was fined 200 Singapore dollars (about 1,000 yuan) for eating durian in a hotel room while traveling in Singapore.

The hotel front desk explained that because they needed to find a professional to clean the durian smell in the room, the room had to be left vacant for several days. The tourist said that this was her first time in Singapore and she didn’t know the common regulations in Southeast Asian hotels. Afterwards, she apologized to the hotel and paid the fine.

Some netizens said that not only in Singapore, but also in most hotel rooms in Thailand, Malaysia and other countries, eating durian is prohibited. Some netizens also said that they should check the taboos before traveling.

Not only that, Singapore’s laws and public transportation management regulations also clearly list durian as an item that is prohibited from being carried on board. It is recommended to eat durian directly at the vendor after buying it in Singapore, or use sealed packaging to properly dispose of it to avoid violating local regulations.
